This Saturday eleven horses will go to post bidding to land the famous AAMI Victoria Derby and it is sure to be just as exciting as one would expect from such a historic race.
Leading Aussie bookmakerSportsbet will have a number of special exotic bet types ahead of the big race, including Jack da Punta's Halloween Trick or Treat:

But before that Nick Wilby casts his eyes over the field and gives you the lowdown on all the runners:
ONEMORENOMORE
Damien Oliver
John P Thompson
35141-44362
Odds: 10.00 (Sportsbet)
Onemorenomore heads to Flemington in great form and a third in the Theo Marks in Sydney is creditable enough form to bring to the table here. He will give the race 100% and if you decide to back him, you know there is unlikely to be any excuses. However, it is doubtful that he has the class for a race like this and he could be better left off the betting slip.
VIKING LEGEND
Blake Shinn
Gai Waterhouse
217-502133
Odds: 12.00 (Sportsbet)
Consistent all spring, Viking Legend will be bidding to follow in the footsteps of his father Elvstroem after a successful campaign in Syndey this year. He heads into the Derby on the back of a decent run in the AAMI Vase and while he is not one of the most likely winners, he should not be underestimated.
SHAMOLINE WARRIOR
Michael Rodd
Mark Kavanagh
1-47211
Odds: 3.20 (Sportsbet)
Almost certain to go off favourite for the big race, the Warrior has been mightily impressive all year and has been finishing his races like a superstar. He will be popular in the betting and rightly so, but punters who back him should know that he will be a long way back at the business end of the race and supporting him is not for the faint hearted. Shamoline Warrior remains the one to beat nonetheless.
MONACO CONSUL
Corey Brown
Michael Moroney
94-121
Odds: 4.80 (Sportsbet)
Monaco Consul heads to Flemington as one of the main threats to the favourite and there is no doubt that he is a horse of some ability. After proving too good for a decent looking field in the mud at Sydney it became clear that he could well be a wet track specialist and he is not going to get his ideal conditions in the Derby. That being said, those who do take a chance on him handling firmer ground could be in for a real treat if he gets the job done on top of the ground
EXTRA ZERO
Nash Rawiller
David Hayes
512-7245
Odds: 11.00 (Sportsbet)
Extra Zero heads into the Derby on the back of a really unfortunate race in last week’s AAMI Vase. Supported with some confidence in that, he was given a poor ride and never got into the race. He has some top form to his name, including when running in the Guineas (where he beat Cox Plate winner So You Think) and if his last run is forgiven, he comes into this with a real form chance. Extra Zero could run well at a price bigger than he should be.
GATHERING
Peter Robl
John P Thompson
23-31223
Odds: 18.00 (Sportsbet)
Gathering has been ultra-consistent all year and was another horse to give Cox Plate winner So You Think a real scare just a couple of starts back. A lot of the burden here will be placed on Peter Robl who will have to get him to the front and try and make all in the Victoria Derby. It sounds as hard as it probably will be but if Robl is capable of getting his sectionals spot on then he get end up being more elusive than many people will expect.
SOUTHERN SKYE
Danny Nikolic
Paul Perry
1-884531501
Odds: 18.00 (Sportsbet)
Southern Sky was last seen beating Derby market principal Rockferry, despite Paul Perry’s horse getting almost no luck in running, suffering interference and having to sustain a long run from the back. It is bizarre to think that his price is so much bigger than his rival that day when they meet here and he could go off at really good looking odds. He will stay all day and is an uncomplicated ride which means that he could be a serious each-way punting proposition.
OUR HEIR APPARENT
Craig Williams
Mark Walker
912
Odds: 17.00 (Sportsbet)
Somewhat of an unknown quantity in the big race, Our Heir Apparent is open to any amount of improvement as a very lightly race three-year-old, heading into the VRC Derby with just three runs under his belt. He was very impressive in the Geelong Classic and there should be no problem with him getting the 2500m. Should not be taken lightly and it would be naïve to leave Our Heir Apparent out of calculations.
PRINSOM
Mark Zahra
Michael Templeton
59-2562107
Odds: 251.00 (Sportsbet)
Simply won’t win. Prinsom doesn’t have the class for a race like this and there will be a fiasco at Flemington if he stuns the world with a victory in the Derby.
ROCKFERRY
Hugh Bowman
Danny O'Brien
613
Odds: 5.00 (Sportsbet)
Rockferry is another lightly race three-year-old getting ready to take his chance on the big stage and it is no secret that the O’Brien yard hold him in the highest regard. Rockferry managed to finish third in the Geelong Classic despite never really being in the race and he looked like a horse of serious quality that day. He certainly looks the part and he could really give the favourite something to worry about here.
COMMONAGE CLOSE
Craig Newitt
Robbie Laing
52-668-4775
Odds: 101.00 (Sportsbet)
Another horse making the transition from the Geelong Classic into the Derby, it would be difficult to argue that Commonage Close was as impressive as some of the others in the Classic and his stamina is not certain to last this sort of trip. He will run his heart out but it is doubtful he is good enough to trouble the likes of Shamoline Warrior and Rockferry.
