Two of Europe’s biggest chances in this year’s Melbourne Cup Cima De Triomphe and Kirkless showed they were ready for their latest challenge, the $2.5 million Caulfield Cup, after a spin at Sandown on Wednesday.
The two remain on course for the race on Saturday week, with one eye cast in the direction of the Melbourne Cup in November.
Luca Cumani, second in the last two renewals of Australia’s biggest race, stepped up the work of Cima De Triomphe, giving him his first bit of serious work since his arrival on the other side of the world on September 26.
Meanwhile, Godolphin’s Tommy Strang sent out Kirklees and stablemate Crime Scene to work together this morning, with Kirkless looking mightily impressive, making up ten lengths on his partner in the spin.
'They did just what was asked of them,' Strang explained, while also confirming that riding arrangements for the Caufield Cup were up in the air with the race clashing on the same day as Champion’s Day at Newmarket. It remains likely that Frankie Dettori or Kerrin McEvoy will land the rides.
'We've got a lot of entries at the Champion's Day at Newmarket on the same day and there's a big meeting in Italy on the Sunday,' Strang continued
